Honoring Traditions
November 6, 1869- Princeton vs Rutgers battled at Rutgers Field in New Brunswick, NJ in what
was the first ever collegiate football game. 50 players and about 100 spectators watched as the teams battled out the
rugby style game which would evolve into the modern day game of today. Rutgers prevailed in the first contest 6 goals
to Princeton's 4 goals. Princeton would gain its revenge in the second matchup later
that same year when Princeton defeated Rutgers 8 goals to zero. The game of college
football had begun.
January 18, 1896- The University of Iowa invited The University of Chicago to play in the first intercollegiate
“five-man team” basketball game. Final Score: Chicago 15, Iowa
12. It must also be noted that in December, 1891, James Naismith, while working as a Physical Education teacher at the
YMCA, created a new game with a soccer ball, a peach basket and a gym. The game is now known as basketball.

remarked by Nick Buoniconti, Hall of Fame Linebacker for the Miami Dolphins and captain of the “No-Name Defense”
during the NFL’s only perfect 17-0 season in 1972, referencing his son Marc, who was injured while playing in a college
football game for The Citadel “In his dreams my son walks. But, how
long can he sleep?”.
We appreciate your continued support and look forward to continued success on the gridiron, track, court,
diamond, field, and all other arenas where our beloved college sports games are played. Cheer with
passion! GO TEAM!
